Interactive Drawing in the Age of Industry 5.0, + investigating collaborative creativity.
Etch-a-sketch 5.0
EtchASketch 5.0 is an interactive exhibition piece that transformed a MakerBot Replicator 2X into a drawing machine. While the machine could operate on G-code, we introduced a mechanism for direct human interaction, highlighting the principles of human–machine collaboration central to Industry 5.0.
To strengthen the connection with the familiar Etch A Sketch aesthetic, we adapted the machine’s design and appearance for exhibition use. The final prototype, developed in collaboration with Nick Brown, successfully combined automated precision with hands-on engagement. After resolving early issues with pen contact by replacing it with a felt-tip brush marker, the machine produced clearer, more consistent sketches, enhancing both functionality and user experience.
