Algorithmic Casting
BY-PRODUCT
This project ran alongside my Master’s final work but was developed as a separate exploration. I became interested in the sculptural qualities of 3D print supports and their potential beyond utility. Using lost PLA casting, I discovered that the algorithmically generated tree supports, designed to hold structures during printing, naturally formed ideal channels for casting material. By digitally converting toolpaths back into geometries, I was able to print multiples and assemble them into a final necklace. The project reframed support structures as intricate, ornamental forms, transforming a by-product of digital fabrication into the centrepiece of wearable design.
