BIOMECHANISMS AND MICROSTRUCTURES - OPTIMISATION OF THE MONOBLOC CHAIR
SEA WEED
Sea - weed is a modular chair designed to function as an artificial coral reef, the chair sources inspiration from the micro structure and behavioural properties of coral polyps so it can optimise growth conditions
The monobloc chair is the most widely used piece of furniture in the world, conceptually this chair must be produced from a single piece of material and it exists as the archetype of the inexpensive chair. The manufacturing process is efficient to the point of production in 2 minutes with no waste. this project aims to investigate how micro and nano structures may be able to bring back biological improvements in material and structural efficiency so that further adaptations or optimisations to this chair can be made. the ultimate aim is a product which functions to a superior standard or optimises specific elements of the chairs design.
